Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween everyone! Hope you enjoyed this year’s spooky holiday. We started our day by getting in a spooky mood making some tasty Halloween treats. We spent some time yesterday searching for some good Halloween-themed treat ideas, and in the process we discovered a great blog called The Pastry Affair. As soon as Charlie showed me The Pastry Affair’s Frankenstein’s Marshmallow Pops,... read more

Birthday Giveaway: €50 One4All Card

Later this week I’ll be turning the grand old age of 33. (That’s okay – that’s still early 30s right?!!) But thats not the only birthday celebration happening in our house this week. It’s also my Blog Birthday. This weekend one year ago, my domain registration came through, and I started setting up Then on November 2nd, I published my very first blog post. And since... read more

Face painting

We’re invited to a Toddler Halloween Party on Monday, which we’re really looking forward to. I have Little Man’s costume all ready – although mine and Charlie’s will involve a last minute scramble tomorrow! As a finishing touch for Little Man’s costume, I decided to paint his face. So I picked up some face paints earlier in the week and thought it would be a good idea... read more

Shiny new toy

All is quiet on this evening because I am completely distracted by a shiny new toy. It’s been a while coming, but our Sony VAIO laptop, which we’ve had for four and a half years, is on its last legs, and we’ve been looking around for a while for an alternative. For years, Charlie has been trying to convince me to switch from PC to Mac, but I was always afraid to make the leap... read more

Wordless Wednesday: Adorable Alligator

It’s nearly time to get ready for Halloween this year. So of course, I’ve been looking back at last year’s Halloween photos. Little Man was an adorable alligator! You’ll have to wait until next week to see what he is dressing up as this year. read more

Carving our pumpkin

When Charlie saw mini pumpkins for sale for just one Euro this weekend, he decided to pick one up and help Little Man carve it for Halloween. (Ok, so Little Man watched and Charlie carved – but it still counts!) I thought Little Man would be so excited to see the pumpkin lit up. But I never expected the reaction we got! “Oh no!!” he shouted! “Fire, Call Sam!” Oh dear. He has... read more

Pampers-UNICEF Make a Difference Movement

On Friday October 21, 2011, I attended the Pampers-UNICEF bloggers event for their Make a Difference Movement. I’ve never attended a bloggers event before, so I had no idea what to expect. Knowing that this event had a big corporate sponsor like Pampers, I was worried that there would be a sense of obligation afterwards to write lengthy glowing reviews of Pampers products – kind of like a thank... read more

Clever Box Club Giveaway Winner!

Time to announce the winner of the Clever Box Club giveaway! Thanks so much to everyone who entered. There was a great response to this giveaway, which isn’t surprising considering how much fun the prize is! Little Man and I had so much fun with our Clever Box Club kit, that I’m sure this week’s winner will love it too. So I’m delighted to announce that the winner of this... read more

Wordless Wednesday: Aaaaggghhh Hairy Scary Monster

In keeping with yesterday’s Halloween theme, we find ourselves obsessed this week with hairy, scary monsters, courtesy of a recommendation from Jill and Dom from the ProperFud blog. They recommended Barry the Fish with Fingers as one of their all time favourite books, so when I saw Barry the Fish with Fingers and the Hairy Scary Monster on sale in my local bookstore this weekend, I had to pick it up.... read more

Things that go bump in the night

I think Little Man must be getting in some practice for Halloween. He’s cutting his eye teeth at the moment, and while he’s still sleeping through the night, I can’t say it’s a restful sleep. Every so often, he lets out a banshee-like shriek before rolling over and going back to sleep. I have to admit, it has us on edge. It’s a bit disconcerting to be woken from a deep sleep... read more

The Friends of Breastfeeding video is here!

Last June, I posted about Friends of Breastfeeding and the video that they were making, featuring submissions from breastfeeding families all over Ireland. Well the video is finished now, and they’ve published it on YouTube: Diary of an Infant Check it out! Talk about an overload of cuteness! Well done to everyone who submitted photos for the video, and well done to Friends of Breastfeeding for... read more

Clever Box Club Giveaway

Remember a couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to test out a Clever Box Club kit with Little Man? (Here’s my review of it if you haven’t seen it: Clever Box Club Review.) The Clever Box Club was started by Elaine McCabe to create a great product based on the ultimate child’s toy – the cardboard box! Recently the Clever Box Club was a winner in the Emerging New Business SFA National Small Business... read more

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. It’s not an official internationally observed day – but the number of countries that observe it as a day of remembrance each year is growing. From 7pm tonight, candles will be lit in those countries in memory of those precious little ones who have been lost. Unfortunately, miscarriage is far more common than most people are aware. In fact, it... read more

Now those are some sandcastles!

One of my favourite parts of our holiday last week was a visit we paid to a Sand Sculptures exhibition in Pera, which was a short drive from Albufeira, where we were staying. I’ve seen the occasional sand sculpture (okay so usually what I see are those little sand dogs that people make on Grafton Street and Henry Street that always look exactly the same no matter who is making them), but I have never... read more

Wordless Wednesday: Fireman Sam to the rescue

Little Man has become obsessed with Fireman Sam. (I’m not so impressed with him and his village full of arsonists, but that’s a post for another day!) “Fireman Sam to rescue!” is becoming a familiar refrain in our house. I think Little Man fancies himself as a future fireman. What do you think? read more

Time to get moving

Last week on holidays I had to admit to myself that I have become desperately unfit. Did I ever tell you how good I was at exercising while I was pregnant? Yoga every week from 20 weeks on. I skipped it one week when I was feeling a bit off, and as it turned out I went into labour that night, so I didn’t feel too guilty for skipping the class. I also swam at least once and sometimes twice a week... read more

Holidaying in Portugal with a Toddler

As I confessed on Saturday, we spent last week in Portugal. I didn’t mention it here until we got back because it didn’t seem wise to announce to the world that our house was empty for a week! But now we’re back and the tans are fading already, so I can tell you all about it. Where we stayed We stayed in a resort called Sao Rafael, just outside of Albufeira town in the Algarve. I’d... read more

Back to reality

Ah back to the chill of an Irish October. Confession time – we’ve been sunning ourselves in lovely Portugal all week. We just got back tonight. It was bliss and I was sad to say goodbye to the sunshine when we got on the plane earlier. Too tired now to write all about our trip, so I’ll leave you with a little snapshot from the week and write all about it on Monday or Tuesday instead.... read more

Twice as tall!

Did you know that if you measure your child’s height on their second birthday, and double it, you have a pretty good estimate for their final adult height? It’s not 100% accurate apparently, but it’s a reasonable indicator. Here’s an article from the Mayo Clinic about it: Child’s Height at Age 2 May Predict Adult Height So of course, we couldn’t help ourselves. Little... read more

Wordless Wednesday: Nostalgia

Little Man turned 2 this week. So naturally I spent half the week looking back at photos of him over the past two years! I’ve probably shared this one before but I’m sharing it again because I love it so much. I can’t help but smile when I look at this one of him snoozing, snuggled in the crook of my Dad’s arm. Was he ever truly that... read more

It’s back: Bavaria 0.0%

Woo hoo! Our local Dunnes Stores has started stocking Bavaria 0.0% non-alcoholic beer again. The closest thing I had to a craving while pregnant was my desire for a nice, cold beer. But there’s only so much Becks I can drink. It just leaves an aftertaste in my mouth that I can’t stand. Last year I blogged about Bavaria 0.0%, explaining how I discovered it during my pregnancy and never looked... read more

My Breastfeeding Story: The End

Since I started blogging almost a year ago, I’ve written about all the main stages of my breastfeeding story with Little Man: The First Hour Our Hospital Stay Coming Home The Breastfeeding Support Group The Low Points The Turning Point The Good Stuff A reasonably complete account of our story – with one major gap. I’ve never written about the end of our breastfeeding story, when we... read more

Clever Box Club Review

Remember a few weeks ago, I attended a photoshoot as part of an article in the Sunday Independent Life magazine? Well, during the shoot, I met Elaine McCabe, founder of the Clever Box Club. Elaine was an architect, who decided to set up her own company, based on the ultimate childhood toy – the cardboard box. Like most parents, Elaine recognised the joy a cardboard box can bring to a child –... read more
