When we found out we were expecting Little Woman, I was determined to get a co-sleeper cot. First time around with her big brother we had used a rocking crib and then the full sized cot/cotbed.
But it was a long long time before Little Man slept through the night and I swore that if we ever had another baby I wouldn’t be spending my nights leaning in over a cot or a crib, trying to settle a baby and...

A funny thing happens when you have a baby. People ask you “Is she good for you?” They don’t mean good in the sense of well-behaved. Or maybe they do, but only where well-behaved equals sleeping. What is this country’s obsession with sleeping through the night?
Honestly I think we have forgotten what normal infant behaviour is. We live in a formula-feeding culture, where the...

I wrote this post back in August when I was nine weeks pregnant, and hardly able to see straight I was so exhausted. Now that I’ve made the official announcement, I’m finally publishing and sharing it.
We’ve started to tell family and friends our news. I guess that means that it’s sinking in that this is really happening. And ever since the scan, it feels like it’s been...

I may have jumped the gun a few weeks ago when I said that we were saying goodbye to naps in this house. Certainly this week has made a mockery of that proclamation.
Little Man napped for 30 or 40 minutes every day at crèche. I wasn’t entirely happy about it because he hadn’t napped at all for us over the weekend before so I wasn’t convinced he needed it.
On Friday, Charlie was...

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I kept hoping and hoping it would be later. I was ignoring the obvious signs – nap time was getting shorter, and it was happening later and later each day. And bedtime was starting to be affected – recently, it has been a push to get Little Man to bed at 8pm, and it’s often been closer to 9pm or 9:30pm. So I guess it shouldn’t have been a...

Little Man is cutting two very painful eye teeth at the moment.
Yes, yes he is almost two and a half and wouldn’t you think we’d be done with this teething malarkey by now… But he only got his first tooth at 11 and a half months, and they’ve arrived slowly, one by painful one, in the 18 months since then. So much for the old wives theory that “if he gets them late, then...

At book club last month, one of my fellow mammies was telling me all about a fish oil supplement that she had started giving her daughter, which she was very impressed with. She claimed that since starting the supplement she had seen an improvement in her daughter’s sleep patterns and overall mood. I was a little sceptical, and wondered if this Eskimo Kids product she was extolling the virtues of...

The Tessell Play Mat wasn’t the only big hit in our house among our purchases from Toddlerland.eu (which we bought using a voucher for €180 that I won on MollyMoo.ie). We also got Billy Winky’s Child’s Pillow, by Dream Genii. Without a doubt, this was another splurge purchase, as a direct result of winning the voucher. But now we couldn’t do without “Billy the...

Life is busy, and if we’re not careful it can pass us by in a blur of work, eat, sleep, work… At least that’s how I feel since I went back to work full time. There are days when I feel like I’ve spent more time sitting in my car commuting than I have spent with my son. Actually, that’s probably the reality rather than just a feeling.
But in the middle of it all, there are...

Last month was a tough one sleep-wise. The whole family was sick – we all had coughs and colds. None of us was sleeping well, and poor Little Man was continuously woken by his cough. On top of this, he seemed to be sleeping too much during the day, and then taking hours and hours to settle at night. We had a lot of nights where he was awake until 9.30pm or 10pm.
Charlie and I had no down-time in the...

I think Little Man must be getting in some practice for Halloween. He’s cutting his eye teeth at the moment, and while he’s still sleeping through the night, I can’t say it’s a restful sleep. Every so often, he lets out a banshee-like shriek before rolling over and going back to sleep. I have to admit, it has us on edge. It’s a bit disconcerting to be woken from a deep sleep...

Routines and schedules are not the same thing.
There – I’ve said it! It’s something that’s been bugging me for a while. I constantly hear people use these terms interchangeably – but it drives me crazy! They are not the same!
Noun: A sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program: “I settled down into a routine“.

Last night I was feeling miserable, so I took to the bed, Lemsip in hand, and this morning Charlie and his parents took Little Man off to feed the ducks and then explore the local market, while I slept and slept. At 11am, I finally dragged myself out of bed feeling much better. After all 11am is a five hour lie-in for me!
But if I hadn’t had Charlie there, the fact that I was feeling rotten would...

Seems like each week brings a new milestone with Little Man. Today was a big one for us. We took the side off the cot, and converted it to a bed. A big boy bed for our Little Man. We could possibly have put it off for another few weeks, or maybe even a few months, because Little Man hasn’t yet climbed out of the cot. But, the only reason he hasn’t is because he hasn’t realised he can....

As you know, I am sleep obsessed (or deprived) depending on how the week is going! There was a point around this time last year, when I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a good night’s sleep and I really didn’t know how I could keep going. It wasn’t just me – Charlie was the same. We continued in our zombie-like state for weeks more, before I really reached...

Have I ever told you how much I love white noise? Last summer, when the sounds of children playing outside kept waking Little Man, we used an iPhone app called Ambiance to play ambiant noise in his room. Actually, we had first used that app when he was just a few weeks old to play womb noises to soothe him. But gradually we found he didn’t need it as much and we eventually stopped using it.

It’s teething season in our house again. Why is cutting teeth just so hard? I think I jinxed us last week when I noticed that Little Man had cut a new tooth with no fuss whatsoever. Such a difference to the first six teeth, each of which lost us a couple of weeks of sleep. Anyway, when I saw that new tooth last week, I was overjoyed. You see Little Man had cut that tooth in the middle of one of the...

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know by now that I am obsessed with sleep and the lack thereof these days. The other day on the radio, I heard a sleep expert warn people that you can never underestimate the importance of sleep. I felt like screaming at him “I know!!!”
So tonight dear reader, since Little Man is asleep and seems quite settled (whereas last night...

A couple of days ago, I posted about Little Man’s separation anxiety as a result of the “kitchen door incident”. My Internet search for a quick fix suggested lovebombing Little Man to help him over his anxiety. As it turns out, that’s just a fancy way of saying “spoil him for a day”.
So for 24 hours, we reassured him, and paid him extra attention. And boy has it paid...

You may have read my story earlier this week about how Little Man managed to lock me in the kitchen, and Charlie had to break down a door to get to him. For almost twenty minutes, Little Man was aware that I couldn’t get to him.
Well afterwards I thought he was fine. I thought it was just me who was traumatised by the whole thing. But as the week as gone on, I’ve realised that’s not...

I love New Year’s Eve. Not from the party point-of-view – God knows we don’t get much of a chance to go out! But from the point-of-view of reflecting on the year gone by and remembering all that has happened.
Looking back on the months from last year, I find most of my thoughts are sleep-related. There’s some other stuff in there too, but in the end, it all comes back to...

Never thought I’d be so happy to see the rain! We woke up this morning to the sound of raindrops. The snow was gone and the roads were clear. Even better than that, Little Man woke without a temperature and he didn’t need Calpol all day. His appetite still hasn’t returned but he is definitely on the mend.
Fingers crossed this means that he will soon go back to sleeping through the night...

Getting Little Man’s naps just right is a fine balancing act. Naps too long and he won’t sleep through the night. Naps too late and he won’t go down to sleep easily that evening.
A few weeks ago he was moved into the senior baby room in the creche where the babies only get one nap during the day. At this stage Little Man still enjoyed his two naps a day so this came as quite a shock to...

I got a shock when the sound of Little Man’s coughing woke me this morning. You see when I checked the clock it was 4.20am and it was the first time he woke me all night. A pleasant change. He’s been teething like crazy so we’ve had more broken nights’ sleep than I can count lately.
Of course my good mood quickly evaporated when I realized that his coughing had woken him as well as...

No not the baby – believe it or not I’m talking about me. Pre-baby, I was dreadful at falling asleep. I could lie in bed for an hour or more running the events of the day through my head, or planning the following day. Certainly not resting or sleeping!
Then to my shock when I was pregnant and I started doing GentleBirth/hypnobirthing, I had an unexpected side effect. I did the course...
