A sweet surprise

A sweet surprise

I had my anomaly scan at the hospital today. Nothing went as we expected. First of all, Little Man is sick and we had to keep him out of crèche today. So until this afternoon we hadn’t decided whether I was attending the scan on my own or with Charlie and Little Man. We weren’t sure what the hospital policy was on bringing children along.

But then Little Man didn’t nap as usual at lunchtime so we decided that if we all hopped in the car, he’d probably fall asleep on the way to the hospital. Sure enough, that’s just what he did. And then we popped him in the buggy and he slept the whole way through the scan.

Being the anomaly scan, this scan was pretty thorough. Baby was measured from this side and that. Thankfully everything looks great. Baby is measuring a little small for dates – almost a week behind. But that’s not surprising for us – Little Man was the same at every second scan. He grew in definite spurts and I’ve long been convinced that this baby does the same.

Once we knew everything was okay, we asked the question we were so excited about. “Can you tell the gender?”

The technician asked us first what we thought we were having. “Definitely a boy,” we both agreed. “This pregnancy has been so similar to the last, it’s hard to imagine anything else.”

“Well,” said the technician with a smile, “I’m 95% certain it’s a…girl!”

We started laughing in shock. Immediately that the scan was over, we started asking ourselves a hundred different questions.

Oh my god, what are we going to do with the 12 boxes of boy’s clothes in the attic? Does this mean we’re going to be inundated with pink and purple for the next ten years no matter how we try to avoid it? Is it true that raising girls is a whole other ball game? What on earth are we going to call her – we’ve only picked boy’s names? Will the two of them be okay sharing a room considering there’s such a big age gap? A girl? Really? A girl?

A little girl. Who’d have thought? 🙂

    • It’s already painted cream and pea green so I figure that’s neutral enough. After that it’s just about the bedsheets right? 🙂

  2. Excitement!!This was one of my questions for you. Well, not the baby’s gender but if you had any names in mind for either gender and if you had any blog pseudonyms in mind?! I only had nephews when I had my first daughter and I used all their hand-me-downs but got a couple of pink things just for photos.

    • I guess this does make the blog pseudonym easy – World, meet Little Woman! 🙂

  3. Lovely! So sweet. Congratulations! You just need to find someone with an older girl and a baby boy to swap all your hand-me-downs with. (Or there’s always TheClothesline.ie, right?)

  4. I don’t think the baby will mind what colour the babygro is. Happy times.

    • Very true. Plus if she’s anything like me she’ll prefer blue to pink! 🙂

  5. Awww so sweet Lisa! Congratulations! 🙂

    • Really? There’s just so much of it – everywhere!
