We’re in this together!
To my surprise, when we found out I was pregnant with Little Man, Charlie proposed that since I couldn’t drink for nine months, he would give up alcohol as well for the duration of the pregnancy. It might sound like a small gesture – but it wasn’t. For me, it was a very clear message that we were in this baby thing together, and it meant a lot to me. It’s harder than you might think to give up drinking in Ireland. All of our major social occasions seem to involve alcohol – and we had three weddings to attend during my pregnancy!
And I actually believe it was harder for Charlie to give up alcohol than it was for me. After all, even the smell of a glass of wine turned my stomach in the first three or four months, so it wasn’t that hard for me to say no. But I know there were a few Friday nights when Charlie would have really liked a nice glass of red to chill out after a long week of work, but he resisted because he had told me he would.
As well as that, there were other nights out to attend, and it was such a relief to know that I would always have at least one other sober person there. In a way, that one gesture from Charlie really helped me feel like he was there for me, and when you’re full to the brim of pregnancy hormones, that means a lot! If you’re currently expecting a baby, why not suggest it to your other half? You never know, they might agree!
If only Lisa…fair play to Charlie – knowing that one of the weddings was mine.I thought I would murder someone for a glass of red at around 20 weeks. Now I couldn’t care if I never saw a glass again at 33 weeks.
What a wonderful hubby with great resolve. I can imagine it was hard for him. People seem to look at you suspiciously if you don’t drink over here. I’m still not back on the booze because I’m breastfeeding and because my little guy wakes up at 5am ready to play. Sometimes I feel like I get more peer pressure to drink now than I did as a teenager.
Definitely Lauren – he was actually put under quite a bit of pressure from friends to drink when we were at social occasions. I was a bit surprised by it considering we are well put of our teenage years at this stage!
