Children should be taught to parent

In the news today, in the UK, fromer Labour Minister Frank Field is calling for children to be given parenting classes to break the cycle of poverty. For the full text of the story, click here.

An interesting idea. I agree with Field when he says that we expect people to learn parenting by osmosis. The learning curve on becoming a parent stunned me! I had no idea how much I didn’t know. And how much I had to learn.

I just wonder about the effectiveness of parenting classes in school at breaking the poverty cycle. In a way to me that almost says “there’s no hope for your generation, so let’s at least see if we can help the next generation.” It’ll be interesting to see how this story plays out in the UK.
