Suddenly it’s easy

Suddenly it’s easy

At some point in the past week, we turned the corner with breastfeeding. The pain I was experiencing started to ease and then gradually disappeared.

I think this is down to a combination of things. First better positioning for feeds thanks to the tips I got from Catriona McCarthy. Second a slower milk flow, again thanks to Catriona’s advice. Third the Jack Newman All Purpose Nipple Ointment really did prove to be the wonder cream I was told it was. Fourth my baby girl grew and her mouth got bigger. And fifth I got used to feeding again.

I won’t lie. It was tough going for a while there. I definitely had lots and lots of feeds where I wondered to myself whether or not I could face latching her on and whether or not I could continue. Thankfully I got the help I needed early and I was able to keep going.

Earlier this week I spotted something interesting. Little Woman has an upper lip tie. This is a condition often found with tongue tie, and it can be associated with breastfeeding problems and pain as well. Obviously I can’t know for sure (and it’s not an issue now because we are past the pain) but I wonder if it was a contributing factor to the problems we experienced.

Whatever the reason for the problems we had, I am so glad we have overcome them. The crack that caused me so much pain has all but disappeared. I think it will take some weeks to close fully but it has definitely healed. Today I sat feeding Little Woman, enjoying how easy the feeds were. Long may it continue!

  1. Well done Lisa, you are doing great. U did amazingly to stick with it when the going got tough.

  2. That’s brilliant Lisa. You did great to stick it out and get to this point 🙂

    • Thanks for all the help and support along the way Julie. Xxx

  3. Well done you!
My little boy has a lip tie. It was reviewed by a consultant at 8 months who saw no reason to snip it. His latch gets super uncomfortable if he gets lazy with it or if he’s unwell or getting teeth, much more than my daughter ever did.

    • That’s very interesting Celesse. I definitely notice that her latch is not as good if she’s very tired. I have to be really careful with it and if she’s sleepy I find I have to give her head extra support to stop her latch slipping, especially towards the end of a feed. Right now I actually get out of bed and go downstairs for the night feeds because I can get a better latch seated upright on the couch and I’m not willing to take any chances with a bad latch doing damage again. I’m going to wait at least another week before gradually reintroducing feeds in bed again.

  4. I really happy to hear that! Congrats and fingers crossed it will continue. My second one has a tounge tie , I just didn’t get support at all and I have a respect that you are able to go downstairs for feeding:-) I knew the women is strongest!
