Baby Bowl

Baby Bowl

I’m starting to think I am the only person in the country who didn’t know about baby bowls. Not physical bowls you understand – obviously I was aware that you could buy plastic bowls for babies to eat from.

No I mean “Baby Bowls” – a mixture of mashed potato, carrots, broccoli, or other vegetables, and gravy or soup. Did you know that most restaurants serve them? Believe it or not I didn’t. I always assumed you had to pick something from the menu or just make up a meal for your baby from your plate. It wasn’t until one day when I really wanted a burger but wanted to order something a bit better for Little Man that I asked the waitress if she could make up a bowl with potato and veg. “Oh a Baby Bowl you mean?” she replied. And I could tell from the way she said it that she was capitalising the B’s.

“Exactly,” I replied, as if I had ever heard of such a thing in a restaurant before. When she left, Charlie and I remarked on what a great idea it was. We wondered if it was common to most restaurants or unique to this one.

The next time we ate out we decided to test it out. “Could you do up a Baby Bowl?” I asked the waiter. “Of course,” he replied, “Would you like it made with soup or gravy?”

So simple. And restaurants are so accommodating with it. Now we ask for a Baby Bowl to be brought out while our food is being cooked, and then Little Man can start on his dinner instead of getting bored waiting. And when our meals arrive out, he just has whatever he fancies from our plates too. So simple. I still can’t believe I didn’t know about it before. Makes me wonder what other little conveniences I’ve been missing out on.

  1. Ooh! I’ve never heard of this either! I wonder if they do it in Canada? Such a great idea!

  2. I didn’t know either!! Great idea 🙂

  3. I’ve heard of them but the cheapskate in me usually makes me make Little M eat off my plate!!

  4. That is so funny Lisa. Were u never with me when I got one for Kate?

  5. The only place I have ever seen this on the menu is in Findlaters in Howth….I did not know that you could just ask for it in other places….great to know!

  6. I didn’t know either – that’s great!

  7. I didn’t know either! What do they charge for it?

    • It varies from place to place Lollyfp – usually between EUR1.50 and EUR3.

  8. I have recently been introduced to the “Baby Bowl” idea whilst visiting our grandchildren in Cork,  Ireland. Everywhere we go, be it a full blown restaurant or even a bistro or merely a coffee shop, when our daughter asks for a “Baby Bowl” she gets (for approx 1 Euro) a bowl containing, as you describe, mashed potato, carrots, cauli, swede, brocolli & gravy, occasionally soup. And it arrives instantly to keep the little ones quiet and busy and out of everyone’s way.
Brilliant idea !!! Plus when they have finished and our meals arrive they already have a container and an eating implement to help themselves from our plates. What could be better ?

    • We’ve actually moved on from Baby Bowls now – Little Man is no longer satisfied with food for babies – he only wants what we’re having! But they certainly are a fantastic idea.
